As educators, we know all too well how tough it is to get (or keep) our energy level up to teach students who sometimes don't want to learn. I've even heard students describe teachers as being "a speed bump to a grade."

It's true that more and more students are not graduating from high school with the necessary skills to succeed in college (or in life for that matter). It's also true that more and more students are taking their education for granted and not respecting the process and the institution of learning.

However, these obstacles also offer us an opportunity to make a huge impact on our students.

One of the cardinal rules of teaching is that students will not believe in you until you first believe in them and what you're teaching them.

As discouraging as some students' attitudes are, nothing should negate the fact that as educators, we have an opportunity to take a closed mind and replace it with an open one. In essence, that's our number one priority... to get students to think.

Our jobs give us a great opportunity to get students to open their minds and challenge themselves beyond their limits. You're not only teaching them basic skills, you're teaching them life skills -- skills that will impact them well beyond the classroom. Unfortunately, if you don't believe this is true, neither will your students.

To get yourself in the right mindset for teaching, skim through the class objectives. Then ask yourself, "How could a student benefit from this material, now and in the future?" Obviously, if you can't think of a student benefit, then maybe you shouldn't be teaching the subject.

If your belief in the subject matter isn't strong, then you will have no conviction in the classroom. And we've all heard the saying, "When it comes to children, you can't kid a kid." Students can detect an insincere teacher faster than a fake I.D.

However, if you truly believe that the knowledge and information taught in your class will prove to be beneficial to your students, then take your conviction and passion and put it into class discussions, activities, and assignments.

The fact of the matter is, students will only care about your class to the degree to which you do (sometimes less, but never more). If you don't care about a thing, that "thing" can and will become a burden on you.

Likewise, if you teach that "thing" for the wrong reasons, you will become a burden on your students. And quite frankly, if a teacher doesn't care, then that teacher shouldn't teach.

Learning a new language is not easy. Each person has their own learning style and learns at their own pace. Once you have decided to take on learning a new language (such as English) there are many different activities you can engage in that will support and reinforce your efforts. Enrolling in an English as a Second Language (ESL) course can help you lay the foundation for developing your English skills. In this case, a trained instructor will guide you through the curriculum and help you by assigning practice assignments and helping you with pronunciation. Below are some tips and ideas that you can use to further help improve your English skills.

Hear English
It seems logical, doesn't it? In order to know how certain words are said, we must hear them being spoken. Hearing them, is actually not enough, you must listen to the sounds and mentally (or orally) repeat them in order to internalize them. The more dialogue in English that you are actively engaged in listening to, the easier it will become to recognize and repeat certain words. Below is a list of good listening opportunities for you:
- Eavesdrop on conversations at a cafe or in line at the supermarket
- Watch movies and television in English
- Borrow children's books accompanied with cassettes from your local library, then listen to the story on the tape while following along in the book
- Listen to talk radio or news on your way to work
English is all around you. Everywhere you go you can overhear people talking to each other in English. Instead of tuning it out, listen closely and try to recognize words or identify new ones.

Read English
Another great way to reinforce your English skills is to read in English. Reading helps your mind grasp how words work together when in context. Read the morning newspaper in English. Borrow a book in English from your local library. You can check out the English version of a book you may have read in your own native language so that you're already familiar with the story and can concentrate on the language in the text. Wherever you are, read the signs and imagine the words you read spoken out loud.

Speak English
As they say, practice makes perfect. In order to truly improve your English language skills, you must practice speaking in English very often. This can be a bit intimidating, especially if you feel as though you have an accent. The truth is, the world is full of people who are working on learning a new language. Have patience with yourself and realize that others will be patient with you too. Consider joining an English language exchange group where you'll have discussions in English. Talk to yourself in English in the shower. Practice speaking in English at home with your family. When you are alone, repeat words you have trouble over an over again to yourself until you feel you have gotten it right.

It was in March of 1986 that the Chicago Sun-Times reported on the latest advance in placement exams, reporting that the "standardized testing of college-level skills recently began its long-awaited shift into the realm of computers." The new, improved approach was developed by the Educational Testing Service, along with the College Board, and was named the "Computer Adaptive Test" (CAT). Its first application was in college placement exams, testing incoming freshmen for competency in mathematics, reading and writing.

The story went on to explain that the CAT differed from the "traditional paper and pencil" placement tests, as the "new test adjusts the difficulty level of the questions to the ability of each test taker." The test structure and design is applicable to just about any subject area, and in the years since its introduction the CAT has been adapted for use in university graduate programs, government and business.

A little history

The U.S. armed service branches were unsuccessful in their early attempts to develop "adaptive tests" using large, unwieldy, expensive and slow mainframe computers. The 1980s brought previously unimaginable power to the personal (micro) computer, and reality finally caught up with theory when the College Board unveiled its CAT Graduate Record Examination (GRE) in the latter part of the decade.

CAT is now accepted as a viable, cost-effective alternative to traditional testing. Software development firms around the world have created "templates" and "shells" with which test-givers can build unique exams without doing R&D on their own. More and more companies will be partnering with government agencies and educational institutions, both private and public, to create customized CATs for placement, grading and licensure purposes. America's business and scientific, future rests on the education of today's higher education students, as well as tomorrow's secondary school students. These students are choosing distance learning degree programs in rapidly increasing numbers. But does the next president of the United States support online degree programs?
In fact, President-Elect Barack Obama is pushing for technological and conceptual developments that support secondary and higher education throughout the U.S. His campaign platform strongly emphasized enhancing the role of online learning. In his speeches, however, he has not yet made clear whether or not he would welcome offering this federal aid money to students enrolled in non-traditional degree programs. If he does advocate this path, he will offer tens of thousands of students the opportunity to work while they earn a degree online.
The president-elect also announced plans for simplifying the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA). While this is needed, merely simplifying the application is not enough. Students who earn scholarships for college ought to be able to use these for any accredited traditional or distance learning degree program in the United States. Scholarships should be made available to anyone enrolled in any accredited college or university, traditional or otherwise.
Furthermore, President-elect Obama plans to offer $4,000 to any college student who performs at least 100 hours of community service, which would greatly assist many students. It remains to be seen, however, whether he will reserve this financial assistance only for students who attend traditional college degree programs.
While Mr. Obama states that he is a supporter distance learning, he criticizes for-profit schools, many online universities and colleges are for-profit, stating that these programs drain money from non-profit institutions of higher learning.
